TANZANIA SAFARI - 10 questions answered
Kate K.F is an expert in Tanzania safaris and the founder of BornWild Adventures. Kate has created countless unique Tanzania safaris as well as traveled to Tanzania several times. There's nothing she loves more than tailoring adventures to suit everyone. Below she answers 10 questions about Tanzania safaris.
Which Tanzania safari is best?
“Whatever Tanzania safari you decide to do, depends solely on what type of trip you want your adventure to be. If its your first time and would like to visit the most legendary national parks, then I would recommend journeying the Northern Circuit route that is not only very popular but also includes some of the most well-known national parks you’ll get to experience, such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park. If you are the type of traveler who loves to travel off the beaten path and enjoys less populated parks then I would suggest a full tour of the Southern Circuit route. It’s famous for being Tanzania’s best kept secret and is an explorers paradise. Aside from these two circuits, there is the Western Circuit route which includes the Mahale mountains - ideal for trekking and chimpanzee spotting. Additionally, you can always opt to create your very own route exploring the parks you really want to visit.”
2. What is the average cost of a safari in Tanzania?
“For a private safari - you should bank on the minimum price per person per day starting at $500. This cost covers the driver / guide, their time, driving time, included meals as well as accommodation for the night. Opting for rustic camping rather than luxurious lodgings can make a huge difference to the price. The season in which you travel also has a big impact on the overall price too. Low season prices can be a lot lower than that of high season.”
3. What is the best time for a safari in Tanzania?
“Tanzania has its highlights in every season of the year. Most tourists love to travel to Tanzania during the dry season, which is from June to October and is also peak season. The grasses are short (ideal for spotting wildlife), the Great Migration is on show and the weather is sunny and warm. However, January and February can be great months to visit because they are sandwiched between the short and long rain season and tend to be relatively dry as well as a lot more affordable. It's also calving season then too so you’ll get to witness an array of newborn animals. The short rain season, which is from November to December is a good time to visit if you don't mind occasional rains - the scenery is a wash with vibrant green foliage and these quieter less populated months make for a more peaceful safari. The long rain season happens from March to May and even though you can expect tropical downpours, you will see an abundance of wildlife, a thriving ecosystem and low-cost prices.
There is only a couple of months I would steer clear of and that is March and April which are the wettest months. However, even these months have a silver lining as it's particularly good for bird watching. So as you can see, each month has its positives.”
4. Is a Tanzania safari worth it?
“A Tanzania safari is absolutely worth the time you spend there, the preparation and the long journey it takes to get there. Africa prides itself on being one of the only places in the world where wild animals roam freely within breathtaking landscapes and unique ecosystems all over the continent. To witness the incredible scenery as well as get to observe wild animals in their natural habitat is an incredible opportunity that leaves a lasting impression. Not to mention being able to witness some of the most legendary wonders of the world from the Great Migration to the Ngorongoro Crater. Tanzania is renowned for being one of the best places to safari - with so many amazing national parks and points of interest, as well as the rich tapestry of history and culture - it's a sensational place to visit.”
5. How many days is enough for a Tanzania safari?
“Depending on where you want to visit and what you want to achieve from your Tanzania safari, it can typically last anywhere from 3 days to 20 days or even longer. The majority of tourists spend a week visiting the most famous national parks along the Northern Circuit route. If you are doing a Tanzania safari for the first time, I would recommend 7 days is a perfect amount of time to visit as this will allow you to get to see an ample mixture of wildlife, culture, scenery and points of interest.”
6. How do I choose a safari company in Tanzania?
“There is a large pool of Tanzania safari tour operators that all sell similar trips and adventures. The differences between each tour operator is the customer service, attention to detail, vehicles, quality of service and guides. It's always worth reading reviews as this will give you a glimpse into what the company is all about. As BornWild is a small tour operator, we pride ourselves on giving excellent service from the moment you inquire to the moment you leave the trip. Our guides are knowledgeable and our passion is creating safari experiences that are unique to each traveler.”
7. Which is better: A private or public Tanzania safari?
“There are many differences between a private safari and a public safari. Firstly, the price of a public safari will be much lower than that of a private safari. On a public safari you will be sharing your adventure and vehicle with other independent travelers. It's really all about preference. On a private safari you have the vehicle to yourselves and the opportunity to choose start and finish times, the focus on your game drives and unobstructed observations. Even though we cannot match every public safari price, we aim to try to work with all our travelers' budgets so those desiring a private safari, we can typically always find a solution that fits within their financial means.”
8. What can you expect from a Tanzania safari?
“You can expect so much from a Tanzania safari. From wildlife sightings to the Great Migration, soaring mountains to rich culture and some of the most incredible national parks within the most beautiful settings. Tanzania bedazzles its first time safari goers and continues to amaze those returning to Tanzania time after time. Tanzania is so vast in size that it would take a good few months to uncover every corner of this magnificent country. So whenever you travel here, you will experience a different adventure each time. Tanzania is an extremely laid back and friendly country that will melt your heart with kindness. It always offers a dream trip that you will remember your whole life.”
9. What animals can you see on a Tanzania safari?
“Tanzania is a haven for wild animals and bird species alike. You can find around 310 mammal species here as well as nearly 1000 bird species. Not to mention reptiles too. If your main focus is on the Big 5, you will certainly get to see them too - however do note that not all national parks in Tanzania have them, some will only have the Big 4. Nevertheless, whatever you see - you will get to experience a wonderful array of wildlife as well as an abundance of natural beauty.”
10. Is Tanzania safe for solo travel?
“Tanzania is safe for solo travelers. I have been to Tanzania many times as a solo traveler. Just make sure you take precautions whilst there, for example don't explore alone after dark, make sure your valuables are hidden and out of sight at all times, only travel with licensed taxi’s, always dress appropriately, book respected lodges and camps and always share your itinerary with a friend or family member. Tanzania attracts many solo travelers but like any city, there are risks so make sure to research before you go.”

Cant Stop Talking About Our Experience!
“My boyfriend and I recently returned from a trip with BornWild, and I haven't been able to stop talking about it ever since. We joined the African lion safari, and it was nothing short of incredible. Everything was well-organized, thanks to Kate. The guides were exceptional and knew so much about the animals we got to see and the areas we visited. Our highlight was the sunrise game drive; watching all the animals as the sun came up over the mountains was a sight to behold. We would definitely book with BornWild again; thanks, guys!” - Rebecca

Thanks Born Wild!
“What a safe, ethical, well curated and personalized travel experience. I discussed my traveling preferences with Kate and she was very receptive in implementing them. Given this was a very remote destination I wanted to feel safe and understand the trip ahead; Kate put me at easy and gave me a "lay of the land" so I felt at prepared. Furthermore, as an avid animal activist, I only wanted to go to a safari where animals' lives and environments were not violated in any way. All of this was accomplished thanks to Kate's understanding and attention to detail. Thanks Born Wild! “- Katie Ross
