LIONS IN ART 


The lion has always symbolized courage and strength. For centuries that symbol has been sustained and here is proof that the lion always has and always will be an image of power, courage, protection and strength. What better way to view this than through the eyes of some of the worlds most famous painters and see lions through their eyes. We go back into time and re-visit those grandeur paintings and pay homage to the ever magnificent "Lion" 



 Henri Rousseau "The Sleeping Gypsy"

'The Sleeping Gypsy' is created by Henri Rousseau in 1897. In the painting, Rousseau portrays an African gypsy in a desert wearing an Oriental costume. She lies beside an Italian stringed instrument and jar of water. In the sleeping gypsy painting, is a fantastical depiction of a lion musing over a sleeping woman on a moonlit night. True to the Henri Rousseau style.

Rosa Bonheur "The Lion Look Out"

Rosa Bonheur Artist was a French artist - painter of animals and sculptor. Her most well-known paintings are exhibited now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Painter Bonheur is widely considered to be the most famous female painter of the nineteenth century. 

Rosa Bonheur artist had a complete menagerie of animals in her home: a lion and lioness, a stag, a wild sheep, a gazelle, horses, etc. Born in Bordeaux in 1822, Rosa Bonheur received her earliest training from her father, Raymond, a minor landscape painter, who encouraged his daughter’s interest in depicting animals. The Lioness owned by Rosa Bonheur described her as " She was tender and as faithful as a dog,"

George Stubbs "A Lion Attacking A Horse"

Artist George Stubbs was obsessed with the subject of a lion attacking a horse, making at least seventeen works on the theme. George Stubbs’s scene of a lion attacking a horse can be read as a symbol of highly charged human interactions. This is the first of sixteen paintings by stubbs artist of this theme. Stubbs often painted domestic animals. Here is one of his most well known paintings.

Rubens "Daniel In The Lions Den"

One of Peter Paul Rubens famous paintings is the subject of 'Daniel 6:1-28' named 'Daniel in the Lions Den'. It shows Daniel as a young man. The Old Testament recounts how the Persian king Darius the 1st "The Great" condemned Daniel to spend the night in a lions' den for worshipping God rather than him. The following morning, after the stone sealing the entrance was rolled away, the astonished Persians saw Daniel, very much alive, giving thanks to God for keeping him safe overnight: "Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt." Daniel's miraculous survival in the cave symbolized the resurrection of Christ from his tomb, and the promise of God's protection to those of unwavering faith. PP Rubens 'Daniel in the Lions Den' painting is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. 

 

Rubens "The Lion Hunt"

Peter Paul Rubens' The Lion Hunt was one of the many paintings commissioned by PP Rubens wealthy connections to depict the wild and exotic creatures they hunted and owned as they conquered lands and colonies in Africa and the East.
The Lion Hunt painting by Rubens in a 1621 is now held in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. It shows two lions attacked by hunters on horseback and on foot. It marks the end of an intensive creative phase for Rubens centred around the theme of hunting.

Eugene Delacroix - "Inclinable Lion"

Eugene Delacroix was born April 26, 1798, Charenton-Saint-Maurice, France—died August 13, 1863, Paris, the greatest French Romantic painter, whose use of colour was influential in the development of both Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting. This is one of Eugene Delacroix artwork of Lions, called 'Inclinable Lionne'
