WHERE IS ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK LOCATED?
As you may have guessed from the name, Arusha National Park is situated close to Arusha in northeastern Tanzania. This city has long been a gateway for eager travelers hoping to venture to the many celebrated national parks in the region.
While visitors will have a lengthy journey ahead to reach the likes of the Ngorongoro Crater, the entrance to Arusha National Park is only around 30 km east of Arusha city. In most cases, this drive will take between 45 minutes and an hour.
Are you planning an extended trip to other national parks across northern Tanzania? It's worth noting that the Serengeti is about 400 km from Arusha National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a little under 200 km away, and approximately 150 km separate the park from Lake Manyara.

2. HOW TO GET TO ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK?
Arusha National Park's proximity to the city of Arusha makes it significantly easier to get to than most Tanzanian parks. Kilimanjaro International Airport is the most convenient entry point to the area, and the city center is just over an hour's drive from here. In some cases, your hotel or tour operator will arrange this transfer for you, but it's also super simple to take a taxi.
You'll have a roughly 45-minute journey to the park from the city. If you plan to stay in the park and travel directly from the airport, the trip will be slightly shorter than the drive to central Arusha. However, this depends on where your lodging is located in the park.
Keep in mind that although Kilimanjaro Airport operates some international flights, you may need to either fly to Julius Nyerere Airport in Dar es Salaam or to Nairobi in Kenya first. From there, you'll catch a connecting flight to Kilimanjaro Airport.

3. BEST THINGS TO DO IN ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK?

Game Drives
For many, game drives are the focus of any trip to a Tanzanian National Park, and Arusha is no different. Depending on your schedule and tour guide, you can choose to embark on a morning, afternoon, or evening game drive, with each time of day offering a different experience.
For your best shot at spotting wildlife in action, set off early in the morning at sunrise when the animals begin to awaken and many will be easily seen.
When it comes to the kinds of species you're likely to see, your chances of seeing a giraffe are indisputably high, as nowhere in the world has such a high concentration of these long-necked creatures! Some of the other animals that reside in the park include elephants, hippos, zebra, and African buffalos, all of which boast large populations.
Unfortunately, Arusha National Park isn't the easiest place to see the Big 5, but if you've got a little luck on your side, you might just notice a lion or leopard.
Walking Safaris
Arusha National Park is a hotspot for walking safaris. Discovering the flora and fauna on foot is a magical experience, allowing you to get a closer look at the diverse terrains and intriguing wildlife that many game drives can't offer. The prospect of wandering around a park filled with powerful creatures can be understandably daunting, but rest assured, you'll be in safe hands with your experienced and armed ranger.
Walking safaris generally take place in specific areas within the park's confines. One such area is the dense forest around the Ngurdoto Crater, while other stand-out spots include the flamingo-filled Lake Momella and the Arusha Waterfalls.
Depending on your needs and preferences, you'll have your pick between short, one-hour walks or much longer, half-day outings.
Canoeing
In addition to the animal-spotting adventures you can enjoy on foot or four wheels, you'll also have the opportunity to explore by canoe. These expeditions are set in the tranquil Lake Momella, which is actually composed of several small lakes. Most canoeing trips take place in what’s referred to as the Small Lake Momella, where you can sail past the giraffes, hippos, and bushbucks that live along the water's edge.
Of course, you'll likely be joined by some fascinating waterbirds along the way. Flamingos, herons, cormorants, and pelicans all call Lake Momella home, so keep your eyes peeled. Similar to walking safaris, canoe tours can last anywhere from one hour to upwards of three hours, depending on the provider you book with.
Birdwatching
Aquatic birds aren't the only winged creatures that you can spot here, as hundreds of bird species can be found in various corners of Arusha National Park.
It's believed that more than 400 types of birds frequent the area, making it a great choice for fervent birdwatchers. During your expedition, expect to see silvery-cheeked hornbills, Hartlaub's turacos, African fish eagles, red-fronted parrots, and augur buzzards.
While you'll spot plenty of feathered friends during your game drives and walking safaris, it's also possible to join dedicated birdwatching tours, which can be arranged in advance before you arrive.
Hiking
Thousands of hikers flock to Arusha National Park every year, as it lies at the foot of the imposing Mount Meru. It's Tanzania's second-tallest mountain; the arduous climb to the top is on many trekkers' bucket lists.
By no means is this an easy hike, so it's something you'll want to think about well in advance if you're planning to complete it. For most hikers, the 43-km trail takes around four days. Although traveling with a guide is highly recommended, there's no obligation to do so. That said, you'll need to be accompanied by at least an armed ranger.
As you make your way to the summit, prepare to be in awe of the ever-changing landscapes, which include moorlands, rainforests, and grassy plains. On a clear day, you'll spot Kilimanjaro in the distance from the top!

The entry fees for Arusha National Park are subject to change and can vary from year to year. These tariffs are in place to protect and conserve the park and its residents, and the amount you'll pay will depend on your age, nationality, residency status, and the time of year you visit.
