Like anywhere in the world, there are crimes to be aware of, however throughout the most popular destinations in Tanzania, like Mt Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, Lake Manyara etc crime rates are particularly low.

The majority of crimes that happen in Tanzania, especially within the northern region of the country are petty crimes such as theft and pickpocketing, particularly in the busy cities and towns.

Homosexuality and same-sex relationships are illiegal in Tanzania. However, it’s important to know that these laws are rarely enforced against tourists visiting the country.

To keep as safe and comfortable as possible, its advisable to be discreet and avoid public affection as well as adhere to local customs when in Tanzania. Tanzania is a highly traditional and conservative country and so dressing appropriately is a way of respecting the local customs of the country.

Women, in particular should always cover knees, shoulders, midriff, arms and cleavage. You can opt to wear jeans, long comfortable trousers, shirts, long sleeved t’shirts and jackets - as long as they aren’t too tight and fitted. Wearing tight fitting clothing as well as short shorts and skirts can cause offense. Low cut tops or tank tops are also frowned upon. IS TANZANIA SAFE AT NIGHT?

If you are in a group or public place, then you should be relatively safe. There are many public bars, restaurants and clubs that are tourist friendly and these places are considered safe. It’s a good idea to be vigilant and aware wherever you go in Tanzania. 

However, the best way to keep away from crime in Tanzania, is not to walk alone at night, bypass isolated areas, not to accept rides from unlicensed taxis or from strangers and to keep your valuables hidden and next to you at all times.

WHAT IS CONSIDERED IMPOLITE IN TANZANIA?

There are a few things that Tanzania considers impolite. Disrespecting their culture is at the top of their list. Not dressing appropriately and public affection are both considered offensive too. Kissing, hugging and even holding hands are to be done in private and away from locals. HOW TO KEEP SAFE IN TANZANIA?

  • Book with a reputable tour operator

  • Be aware of your surroundings and potential crimes within the area you are visiting

  • Avoid walking through isolated areas alone as well as after dark. 

  • Keep personal belongings close to you and out of sight of people around you. 

  • Do not hitch hike, drive with unlicensed taxis or with strangers offering you rides. 

  • Do not take out cash or valuables in public.  

  • Avoid taking part in political protests.

  • Take emergency numbers with you at all times

  • Have all your required vaccinations as well as Malaria medication before arrival

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU TO KEEP SAFE IN TANZANIA?

  • Money belt or a neck wallet. These will keep your valuables safe and close to you at all times.

  • Lock your phone with a password. Before traveling to Tanzania - make sure that your phone is as secure as possible and locked so that in the event that it is lost or stolen, you have a double layer of security. 

  • Portable travel safe. It's a great idea to bring a portable travel safe with you to Tanzania as hotels and lodges don’t always supply one.

  • Travel Insurance. Make sure you take out travel insurance which will cover you for medical emergencies, theft as well as trip cancellations.

  • Keep copies of important documents. In case of theft or misplacing items, its a good idea to make copies of your passport, visa information and any other important documents.

  • Purchase a local SIM card. For communication and GPS services - purchase a local SIM card so that you can stay in touch with family as well as use the GPS system as a map.
